Visiting San Francisco Itself in an RV
How to actually enjoy the city without fighting it in a 30-foot vehicle.
The golden rule
Park the RV and leave it parked. San Francisco rewards pedestrians and transit riders and punishes drivers, especially drivers of tall vehicles on steep hills. Every good RV city day starts at the campground.
Getting around
- From Marin: the Larkspur Ferry to the Ferry Building. The best commute in the Bay Area.
- From Candlestick: Muni light rail downtown.
- From Pacifica: drive to a BART station with RV-friendly parking, then BART in.
- Rideshares fill the gaps, but surge pricing around events is real.
A sane 2-day plan
Day 1: Ferry Building, Embarcadero, Fisherman's Wharf, and a bay cruise. Day 2: Golden Gate Park (de Young, Academy of Sciences), Haight-Ashbury, and sunset at Twin Peaks or Battery Spencer. Alcatraz needs tickets booked weeks ahead.
What to skip with an RV
Do not attempt Lombard Street, do not park near Fisherman's Wharf hoping for a spot, and do not leave anything visible in any vehicle anywhere in the city. Break-ins are the Bay Area's worst tourist tax.

Flying in? Rent the RV, we will show you where to park it
No rig of your own? Book a motorhome or campervan from a local owner or fleet and pick it up near SFO or in the city. Compare live prices on the big rental marketplaces.
