Planning
How Much an RV Trip From San Francisco Really Costs
Sample budgets for 3 days and 7 days, plus the fees that surprise first-timers.
A realistic 7-day budget (2 people, rented Class C, shoulder season)
| Item | Estimate |
|---|---|
| RV rental (7 nights) | $1,050 to $1,750 |
| Campgrounds (7 nights) | $455 to $875 |
| Fuel (~700 miles) | $180 to $260 |
| Insurance / protection | $100 to $200 |
| Food (cooking mostly) | $250 to $400 |
| Total | $2,035 to $3,485 |
These are planning ranges, not quotes. Summer, holidays, and bigger rigs push every line up.
A 3-day weekend version
Cut the rental to 3 nights ($450 to $900), two to three campground nights ($130 to $375), and one tank of fuel. Realistic range: $800 to $1,600 before food.
Where the money goes wrong
- Mileage fees: many rentals include limited miles, then charge per mile. Map your route first.
- Generator use: some owners charge by the hour. If you are mostly on hookups, you barely need it.
- One-way drop fees: picking up in SF and dropping in LA can add hundreds. Loops are cheaper.
- City parking: budget for campgrounds every night. Street parking an RV in SF is not a plan (see parking rules).

Common questions
How much does a week-long RV trip from San Francisco cost?
For two people in a rented Class C: roughly $2,000 to $3,500 all-in for 7 days in shoulder season, covering the rental, campgrounds, fuel, food, and insurance. Peak summer runs higher.
What is the biggest hidden cost of an RV trip?
Mileage and generator fees on rentals catch people out, followed by campground fees near the city, which run $65 to $125+ a night. Always read the rental listing's fee section.
Is an RV trip cheaper than hotels?
For families, often yes: one RV replaces two hotel rooms plus restaurant meals. For couples, a hotel trip can be cheaper once you add rental, fuel, and site fees. Run the numbers for your group size.
