Wine Country by RV: Napa and Sonoma From Your Campsite
Base camp in Petaluma, day-trip into the vineyards, and never worry about the drive home.
The base camp
Petaluma KOA is the natural headquarters: full hookups, room for big rigs, and you are 20 to 40 minutes from the tasting rooms of Sonoma and southern Napa. Marin RV Park works too if you want to split time with the city.
How to do it right
- Do not drive the RV to tastings. Park it for the day and use a tour, a rideshare, or the winery shuttles. Tasting-room parking lots are not built for 30-foot rigs, and nobody needs that stress.
- Sonoma first: the town of Sonoma and the Sonoma Valley are closer to Petaluma and more relaxed than Napa.
- Napa second: an easy day trip up Highway 29 or the Silverado Trail. Book tastings ahead; walk-ins are increasingly rare at the big names.
- Stock the rig: buy cases at the wineries and load them straight into the RV. This is the whole point.
When to go
Harvest season (August to October) is the most atmospheric and the most crowded. Spring brings mustard flowers and easier reservations. Winter is quiet, wet, and cheap.
