RV Parking Rules in Berkeley
Berkeley's rule is a clock, not a map: oversized vehicles, RVs included, may not park anywhere in the city between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m.
The rule
Berkeley Municipal Code section 14.40.120 prohibits parking oversized and commercial vehicles between 2:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m., and it applies on every street in the city, not just signed blocks. The section dates to 1952, when it was aimed at long haul truck drivers using Berkeley as a rest stop, and the city amended it in March 2019 to name recreational vehicles explicitly. An RV parked on a Berkeley street at 3 a.m. is in violation whether or not anyone is asleep inside it.
Outside those hours, ordinary rules govern: posted signs, residential permit zones near the university, meters downtown, and the state 72 hour storage limit. There is no Berkeley permit that buys an RV an exemption from the overnight ban for visitors.
What this means for your trip
Berkeley works fine as a day trip and not at all as a street overnight. The closest legal bases are across the bay or down the shoreline: Marin RV Park to the north, or the East Bay's own campground at Anthony Chabot, which our best parks guide covers in context. If your plans center on Berkeley and the Oakland hills, sleep at a campground and drive or ride in; the day trips guide shows how Bay Area RVers structure exactly that.
Common questions
Can I park an RV in Berkeley during the day?
Generally yes, subject to posted signs, meters, and permit zones, and subject to the state 72 hour limit. The hard wall is the clock: between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. the oversized vehicle ban applies everywhere in the city.
Does the Berkeley ban apply to a campervan?
The 2019 amendment wrote recreational vehicles into section 14.40.120 explicitly, so a vehicle classed as an RV is covered at night. A plain passenger van that is not an RV and not oversized is in a different position, but if you sleep in it, expect attention either way.
Is Berkeley enforcement active?
Berkeley enforcement is widely reported as complaint driven, often starting from 311 reports. Complaint driven is not the same as absent: one neighbor call is enough, and the ban hours are short and easy to patrol.
