RV Parking Rules in San Jose

San Jose's oversized vehicle law is a set of posted zones, not a citywide ban. Know the definition, read the signs, and most of the city follows ordinary rules.

Read this first: this page is a plain English summary, not legal advice. Ordinances change and posted signs on the street always win. Every rule below names its code section so you can check the source yourself before you rely on it.

The rule

San Jose Municipal Code section 11.98.060 prohibits parking an oversized vehicle within zones the city has designated and posted. Oversized here means a vehicle over 6 feet tall and/or over 7 feet wide, which sweeps in nearly every motorhome and most campervans. The zones exist for sight line safety: a tall rig parked near a school or an intersection hides children and cyclists from drivers, so the city clears those corners.

Posted zones carry their own terms. School buffer areas, for instance, are signed as tow away zones with overnight windows such as 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Inside a posted zone, the sign is the law and towing is on the table. Outside posted zones, San Jose parking for an RV is governed by the standard mix: the state 72 hour limit, street sweeping, meters, and permit districts near downtown and the university.

What this means for your trip

San Jose is the most workable big city in this database for a visiting RVer, with one discipline: never park near a school or a major intersection without reading every sign on the block, and never treat a wide suburban street as storage. The South Bay also has real campgrounds within reach for the nights that matter, and the where to park guide maps the options around the bay. If you are passing through on 101 or 880, plan the overnight as a campground stop, not a curb, and San Jose will not trouble you.

Common questions

Is RV street parking banned in San Jose?

Not citywide. San Jose bans oversized vehicles, defined as over 6 feet tall or over 7 feet wide, only inside zones the city has posted under Municipal Code section 11.98.060. Outside posted zones, the general rules and the 72 hour limit apply.

What do the posted zones look like?

They are signed areas, many of them near schools and intersections, where oversized vehicles hurt sight lines. Some carry tow away windows, for example No Parking 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Tow Away signs in school buffer zones. If the sign is on your block, it controls.

Why is San Jose different from San Francisco?

The two cities wrote different laws. San Francisco capped RVs at two hours everywhere. San Jose aimed its rule at specific safety problems, sight lines near schools and crossings, so its ban follows the signs rather than the clock.
