RV Parking Rules in Pacifica
Pacifica bans oversized vehicles on about 95 percent of its streets. The remaining few percent are published by the city, and finding them is the entire trick to a legal stop.
The rule
In January 2020 Pacifica enacted an oversized vehicle ordinance that prohibits OSV parking on approximately 95 percent of city streets, selected using traffic safety criteria such as street width and sight lines. It is not an overnight rule: on a prohibited street, an oversized vehicle is in violation in the middle of the day too. Enforcement began in earnest in September 2020, fines escalate with repeat citations, and the ordinance has been litigated ever since.
The useful byproduct of that litigation: a court ordered the city to publish, on its website and at City Hall and the libraries, the list and map of streets where oversized vehicles can park. That list is short, it changes the answer block by block, and it is the single document to consult before bringing a rig into Pacifica. Our parking rules guide explains how Pacifica fits into the wider Bay Area picture.
What this means for your trip
Pacifica is worth the trip; it is the coast at its best, and it hosts one of the six parks in our directory. Stay at SF RV Resort and the ordinance becomes background noise: you are off the street, on a bluff above the ocean, and the town is yours on foot and by bike. What does not work is treating a quiet Pacifica side street as a free campsite. In this city, of all the cities in this database, that mistake is the most reliably punished.
Common questions
Can I park an RV on any street in Pacifica?
On a short list of them, yes. The city's oversized vehicle ordinance prohibits OSV parking on roughly 95 percent of streets, chosen by traffic safety criteria, and the city publishes the list and map of streets where oversized vehicles may park. If a street is not on that list, assume it is prohibited.
Does the ban affect just visiting for the beach?
The ordinance covers parking, not just overnighting. Day use in an oversized vehicle on a prohibited street is a violation. Use the beach and trailhead lots where your rig fits, or stay at SF RV Resort and walk or ride to the sand.
Is the Pacifica ordinance still being enforced?
Yes. The city enacted the ordinance in January 2020, began active enforcement that September, and has defended it in court since. A court order required the city to publish the allowed streets list, which is the document to check before any Pacifica stop.
